‘I’m not surprised’: Club legend weighs in on United’s reported interest in ‘very good’ ‘proven goalscorer’

Steve Bruce has reacted to Manchester United’s reported links with Callum Wilson, which came to light in the January transfer window.

As Newcastle United seek room to manouevre around Financial Fair Play regulations, the expectation remains that the club will have to offload their more valuable assets if they want to bolster their squad this summer.

The situation led to speculation last month that the Red Devils were among three striker-hunting Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, in pursuit of Wilson, though nothing came to pass for any of the sides.

In truth, adding the 31-year-old on a short-term deal or loan wouldn’t have surprised the Old Trafford faithful, as the board’s winter business in recent years has been abysmal – especially on the No.9 front.

Wilson has registered 86 goals and 27 assists across 217 appearances in the league for both the Magpies and Bournemouth, but has endured an injury-plagued career in recent years. Even now, the England international faces 12 weeks on the sidelines with a chest muscle issue.

Bruce lauds Wilson

However, former Red Bruce, who managed the player during his time in the dugout at St. James’ Park, is of the opinion that Wilson would’ve perhaps aided United’s squad due to his talents in front of goal. He explained: “Wilson is a proven goal scorer, just look at his figures. The kid stacks up. He’s unfortunately had a few injuries but when he’s fit he’s a very good player.

“I’m not surprised he’s linked with clubs including Man United at all because if you look at his record, especially since he’s been at Newcastle, he’s turned himself into a very, very good number nine.”
