Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic has provided an update on Lisandro Martinez’s condition and expected return timeframe.
The Manchester United stalwart was withdrawn early during Sunday’s win over West Ham United after colliding with Vladimir Coufal and taking the full weight of his opponent on his leg, which left Martinez requiring medical attention. After leaving the pitch, he headed straight down the tunnel for further treatment.
Whitwell has now confirmed that the Argentine has suffered a sprain to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and is therefore expected to be out of action for around eight weeks. He will not require surgery.
Fabrizio Romano adds that United are hoping to have Martinez back in the squad following March’s international break.
Martinez suffers second setback this season
It comes as an unprecedented blow for both the club and player when considering that Martinez has only just made his comeback from a four-month spell on the sidelines, in which he was recovering from a re-aggravation of the metatarsal fracture that ended his maiden United campaign prematurely.
The 26-year-old is undoubtedly one of the most impactful and pivotal members of the squad – hence their frequent struggles in his absence.
