Louis Saha believes Manchester United should consider move for Newcastle striker

Louis Saha believes Manchester United should consider a move for Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson.

Last week, speculation emerged that United were among three Premier League clubs chasing the Newcastle striker ahead of transfer deadline day. The other clubs included Arsenal and Chelsea.

The news came shortly after United announced that Anthony Martial had undergone surgery on a groin complaint and would be spending 10-weeks on the sidelines. This leaves Rasmus Hojlund as the only recognised centre forward in the squad.

Saha has told Betfred that United need to find an experienced striker to help young attacking players like Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. Despite Wilson’s injury, he believes the striker could help United in our current situation.

The former United striker said: “I believe he’s somebody to consider because he’s an experienced striker and the team needs experience in their squad to positively affect the balance. [Rasmus] Højlund is a young lad, Antony and [Alejandro] Garnacho are still very young, so I believe adding more experience up top is something to consider. They need a forward that knows where to go and is capable of asking for more from the players around him.

“Callum is a player to consider because he’s a good striker with a good record and he’s scored a lot of goals in the Premier League for Bournemouth and Newcastle United. He could help Manchester United in their current situation because additions in the forward line could be important for helping the team catch up on those ahead of them in the Premier League table.”

Meanwhile, fellow Frenchman and former United player Mikael Silvestre is in disagreement with Saha because he doesn’t think United should be trying to sign Wilson.

Silvestre told bettingexpert.com: “Callum Wilson could be good for United as a back up but I wouldn’t expect him to improve the number nine position.”

“He’s good for Newcastle but he isn’t the number one striker and has been injured a lot so I don’t think he should be a target.”

Howe bewildered by Wilson to United links

When speaking to reporters about Wilson’s future on Monday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe stressed that his back-up striker is committed to the Magpies, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News: “Callum is 100 per cent committed just like Kieran [Trippier]. That is why I was surprised by the noise about Callum. He is currently injured. From his perspective and our perspective, there is nothing in it.”
