Manchester United prepare for World Cup winner’s exit this summer

Manchester United are preparing for Raphael Varane’s departure, according to reports.

The Frenchman, 30, has had his issues with injuries since joining United after spending 10 successful years at Real Madrid.

Erik ten Hag is likely to request additions to his defensive department in the summer and Varane isn’t the only centre-back facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

According to Football Insider, Varane will be allowed to depart the club once his contract expires in the summer. This means United have no intentions to offer the World Cup winner a new deal to extend his stay.

There is no doubting Varane’s ability – even at this stage of his career – but his lack of availability has been an issue for Ten Hag, making the former Madrid star problematic in terms of selection.

Varane’s injuries were made worse this season by United’s injury crisis in defence. There has been no consistency when it comes to manager selecting his back four for each game.

At least Lisandro Martinez returned before the winter break. The Argentina international has missed most of the season, but he’ll be aiming for a strong end to the campaign.

Where next for Varane?

It depends on what the player wants for the next chapter of his career.

There will be interest from the Saudi Pro League as well as a return to Ligue 1, although it’s worth noting how many players appear unhappy after moving to Saudi Arabia in the summer.

Meanwhile, Varane knows a return to France will mean a pay cut.
