Even though Paul Pogba is no longer in the Premier League, Graeme Souness has demonstrated that he has no intention of stopping the conversation about the French midfielder, claiming that the player’s decline began with the World Cup victory.
Throughout Pogba’s six years at Old Trafford as Manchester United’s record signing, Souness was open about his feelings about the player.
The £89.3 million player had inconsistent results during his second stint with the team before joining Juventus again on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.
The 30-year-old’s involvement for Juventus has been restricted by injuries, and he missed the 2022 World Cup even though Les Bleus advanced to the final. After just two games this season, Pogba suffered another setback when he failed a drug test.
After just two years back at Manchester, Pogba won the World Cup, leading France to victory over Croatia in the final. However, Souness contended that the tournament triumph could have hindered Pogba’s progress at the club level.
“He had the equipment to be the best midfielder in the world,” the 70-year-old told talkSPORT.
“I saw a young man that was going through emotions a lot of the time, and that frustrated me. With that physique and that technical ability, he just did not have the right attitude to make him a superstar.
“The worst thing that happened to him was winning a World Cup, because he could turn and say, ‘I am a World Cup winner’. I think at that point, it was him going backwards.”
