Conti Cup: Man City beat Manchester United as both teams qualify for quarter-finals

Man City finish top of Group B in the Conti Cup after beating Manchester United 2-1. The Blues will automatically qualify for the knockout stages after securing 10 points.

The defeat means United’s 100% record in the Conti Cup comes to an end as they drop to second, but Marc Skinner’s side should reach the quarter-finals as one of the best placed runners-up.

The draw for the last eight takes place on Friday 26 January on BBC One’s Sportsday Programme, which begins broadcasting at 18:30. The one-legged ties will take place on either Wednesday 7 or Thursday 8 February.

It was a really even first 45 minutes at the Joie Stadium, with chances for both sides as United played on the counter-attack really well. City scored just three minutes into the second half when Chloe Kelly got netted the opener for the hosts. Then, Lauren Hemp doubled the lead for City after a short-range effort that fired past Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

The Reds pulled a goal back in injury-time as Nikita Parris flicked the ball into the net from close range. With seconds counting down at the end of nine added minutes, Geyse ran past several City players but her effort was denied by Keating to prevent a late equaliser.
