Newport County to expand stadium for Manchester United tie in FA Cup

Newport County will erect a temporary stand for the FA Cup fourth round tie against Manchester United.

After a 3-1 win over Eastleigh in their third round replay, Newport secured a dream tie with United which means the Reds will travel to Rodney Parade on Sunday, 28 January.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4.30pm, and it promises to be a long day of travelling for the United fans that are successful in the ballot.

However, Newport have announced that the stadium capacity will increase by 1000 to a total of 9,000.

The temporary stand will be in place for the weekend’s League Two clash against Wrexham and will stay erected until after the game against United. This means United will be provided with an extra 400 seats in the away end.

A statement from Newport’s official website read: “Another 1,000 passionate members of the Amber Army will get the chance to back the Exiles against Wrexham and Manchester United with the erection of a temporary stand behind the North Terrace.

“Construction of the uncovered stand will get underway tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) in time for the League Two clash with Wrexham on Saturday after the Welsh derby sold out last week.

“It will remain in place for the Emirates FA Cup fourth round tie against Premier League Manchester United on Sunday, January 28 (4.30pm).

“While the additional ticket sales will only just cover the costs of erecting the stand for the two games, the club felt it was important to offer as many people as possible from the local community the opportunity to sample big game football at Rodney Parade – and help build momentum for the future.

“The club is also adding an additional 400 seats to the away stand to meet the FA’s allocation guidelines for the Manchester United tie. The seats will remain in place for the League Two games against Wrexham, Swindon and Notts County to cover costs.”
