Benfica set to sign Alvaro Fernandez with mandatory buy option

Benfica have been working on a deal to sign Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez and it sounds like everything is coming together.

The Spaniard spent the first half of the season on loan with La Liga outfit Granada, but according to Record he has now been given permission to travel to Benfica to undergo his medical.

Fernandez has agreed to sign with the Portuguese champions on a temporary deal until the summer, although they have an obligation to buy him for €8 million at the end of the season.

As a result, Benfica will start paying the fee from the 2024/25 season.

That is the only clause outlined by the Record report, though fans will be eager to see a sell-on or buy-back clause of some sort in Fernandez’s deal to Benfica.

Fernandez is understood to be pencilled in for a medical examination today and he will sign his contract shortly after. He was once described as one of the brightest talents in the academy, but Ten Hag will have looked at his squad and whether there’s a pathway for the Spaniard into the first team as part of his thought process.

Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia can all play at left-back. Furthermore this is an exciting switch for Fernandez if it means more game time like he enjoyed at Granada.
