Dwight Yorke names three players he would sign for Manchester United

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has recommended three players for Manchester United to sign in order to take us back to the top of English football, as the wait for our first Premier League title since 2013 continues.

Yorke, who in his first season at United was a key player in guiding the Reds to the Treble, knows what it takes to be successful at the biggest football club in England.

However, his pedigree as a manager remains to be tested at the top level, even though he’s never been quiet about the lack of opportunities he has received. Yorke did have a spell as manager of A-League side Macarthur FC but is currently out of the managerial game.

In a recent interview with Footy Accumulators, as cited by the Manchester Evening News, Yorke named three players he would sign if he was manager of United. Perhaps the biggest shock is that he doesn’t think we need any defensive reinforcement when it is clear there will be changes in that department this summer.

“If I were in charge of Man United and had to sign three players, then I’d pick Victor Osimhen, Leroy Sane, and Son Heung-Min.

“I feel United are OK defensively, but they lack options in midfield. I wouldn’t say the club needs a clearout, but they need at least six new players to freshen up the whole team. Too many players have been there for too long!

“I think Leroy Sane would give United plenty of options on the right and he’d complement Rashford well. Victor Osimhen would inject firepower and goals, and he’d complete my ideal front three.

“Midfield options are needed, but I’m struggling to think of any stand-out names. I feel like Man United have lost their identity in this department over the last 18 months, and I worry about how fragile they look there. I find myself second-guessing the team before each game!”

Those three players would cost over £300m in the current market and I highly doubt Ineos will be forking that amount on our attack alone – in their first summer – when United have issues all over the pitch. That’s not to say that all three players wouldn’t improve the current squad. We all know they would.

However, I would agree with Yorke that United have lacked identity in midfield, but we did seem to have a bit of that last season when Casemiro was playing at his highest level.

A young combative midfielder should be on the agenda.

  1. It is just simply amazing how former “good football players” think they become “experts” when suggesting for Man Utd. Personally I would add Halaand, Lautaro Martinez and Mbappe. Oh by the way it would “only” cost about 400 million pounds!! Let’s add more DEBT! Maybe I’m an eternal optimist but a top four finish will happen with the current squad and a little tweak.
