Preview: Wigan vs Manchester United – Reds favourites to progress in FA Cup

The FA Cup is back underway but Manchester United must wait until Monday night for their third-round tie against Wigan Athletic.

Although it has been a difficult season for the Reds, they go to the DW Stadium as clear favourites since the two teams are separated by 53 places on the football league ladder.

United recently threw away the momentum of a superb comeback win over Aston Villa by losing to Nottingham Forest last weekend. That is why I think Erik ten Hag will name a strong side to face the League One outfit on Monday night.

Wigan, meanwhile, were held to a draw at Barnsley on New Year’s Day which leaves them 17th in the table. It must be stressed that Wigan were given a hefty points deduction to start their campaign.

However, the match kicks-off at 8.15 and it will be televised live on ITV1, with coverage beginning at 7.30pm.

Team News

Liverpool loanee James Balagizi ended his spell at Wigan prior to this tie, so he won’t be available for selection. They will also be without Tom Pearce and Jason Kerr.

Furthermore, Wigan have doubts such as Stephen Humphrys and Scott Smith.

United were dealt good news during the week as Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro returned to first team training. That said, the clash at Wigan may come too soon for the pair.

Fans will be watching to see if Ramus Hojlund, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw make returns to the team.

Match prediction

Wigan have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions, so this is a game United should be winning by breezing past their opponents.

The League One side have not hosted United in over a decade, when they were beaten 4-0, but the Reds go into Monday’s game having now lost four of their last six matches.

Wigan 0-3 Manchester United
