Sam Allardyce claims Manchester United missed a trick not re-signing top talent

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce claims Manchester United missed a trick not re-signing Wilfried Zaha last summer.

The Reds initially brought Zaha to the club in 2013 as Sir Alex Ferguson’s final signing, however, the legendary manager had been replaced by David Moyes by the time he officially moved to Old Trafford from Selhurst Park.

‘Big Sam’, who has put himself in contention for the Republic of Ireland job, was speaking on his No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast as he discussed United and mentioned that he’d have had re-signed Zaha for the club.

“I’d have gone and got him. I’ve worked with him obviously, but I would’ve taken him on a free all day long,” said Allardyce.

“I think he wanted Champions League football,” Allardyce continued.

“Well I would’ve given him Champions League football at Man United, he had Fergie didn’t he, but he was too young then he was.”

Zaha was a young kid at the time and he only managed to make four appearances during his time at United, after Moyes decided to send him on loan to Cardiff City mid-way through his first season.

Everyone drew the same conclusion that Moyes didn’t fancy Zaha, a recommendation from Ferguson, and he was then sent back to Palace where he enjoyed an brilliant career in the Premier League.

However, Zaha decided to move out of his comfort zone last summer in his quest to play Champions League football, by joining Super Lig giants Galatasaray.

On his return to Old Trafford this season, Zaha scored in Galatasaray’s 3-2 win which came during our abysmal Champions League group stage campaign.

Zaha is recognised now as a top talent, but at 31-year-old I think it’s fair to say United should be looking at younger players in the transfer market.
