‘One title in 30-odd years’: Keane slams ‘arrogance’ of Liverpool ace after post-match dig at United

Roy Keane didn’t take too kindly to Virgil van Dijk’s post-match comments following Liverpool and Manchester United’s goalless stalemate.

The Red Devils claimed a point from their trip to Anfield in what was a vast improvement over March’s humiliation on enemy lines.

Liverpool, as expected, were the more dominant side across the 90 minutes, registering 69% possession, 600 passes and 34 shots (eight on target), but they ultimately failed to get past Andre Onana in what was a powerhouse-like showing from the goalkeeper.

Squandering their chance to go top of the Premier League table, Jurgen Klopp and his side were left frustrated by the draw as their 11-game winning streak on home turf came to an end.

Keane puts Van Dijk in his place

Club captain Van Dijk went on to fire some thinly veiled digs at United in his post-match interview, claiming that “there was only one team trying to win” and “they’re [United] buzzing with a point”.

However, Keane was quick to put him in his place after watching the clip in the Sky Sports studio, saying: “There’s a lot of arrogance coming out of him, dissing Manchester United like that. He needs reminding that he is playing for a club that has won one title in 30-odd years.

“Manchester United are in a difficult place, just like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many years. So maybe that arrogance backfired on him today. He needs to remember where he is coming from. One title in 33 years?

“He said Man United were buzzing and one team came to play. Yeah, I’ve come to Anfield many times with Manchester United where Liverpool were in a tough place and they were happy with a draw. The bottom line is that the most important stat is the scoreline. Liverpool had chances and didn’t take them. That’s their own fault.”

  1. Buzzing with a point? Yes, I am. Different for you, of course, VVD. If your outfit returned to a venue where you’d lost 0-7 on your last appearance, you’d have been pissed off to get a point next time; to concede no goals, I’m sure.
Still: thanks for confirming how much that hurt, and we’re truly sorry your forwards couldn’t score against us. Still, Bournemouth only got 3 so you’re NEARLY as good as they are, Mr. Good Sport.
