Nottingham tram named after Manchester United goalkeeper

Manchester United and Lioness goalkeeper Mary Earps has had a tram named in her honour in her home city of Nottingham.

The 30-year-old is finally getting the recognition she deserves after playing a major role in England’s journey to the World Cup final earlier this year.

England were unable to come out on top during a penalty shootout with Spain, though Earps’ efforts have been celebrated in her home country ever since.

The 37 trams that serve Nottingham are each named after notable local figures, including former Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough.

Earps has told the BBC it was a “pinch me” moment when she saw a tram named after her.

“It’s pretty unbelievable,” Earps said. “I can’t say I ever expected something like this. I’m obviously really proud and I’m so glad I could get back today and unveil the name on the side of the tram.

“I’m very, very grateful.”

The World Cup Golden Glove recipient was nominated for BBC Sports’ Personality of the Year 2023.
