Outdated department at Manchester United set for overhaul

Manchester United are reportedly set to carry out a massive overhaul of their medical department which has been subject to criticism.

It comes as no surprise that this would happen when there’s an injury crisis at the club. Not in the summer before a ball is kicked.

However, the report in question doesn’t state the overhaul is directly as a result of the state of injuries that have greatly hindered the team this season.

During United’s 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, two more players were added to the injury list as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were both forced off in the first half with injuries. It doesn’t help that we’ve had so many games with fixture congestion becoming an issue for other Premier League teams too.

According to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, United have decided to take action by way of overhauling their medical set-up after an extensive review of the department was carried out.

Mokbel reports: “The audit, led by head of sports medicine Gary O’Driscoll, is underway with a view to modernising the club’s approach and will ultimately result in a range of recommendations being made to INEOS staff once their 25 per cent buyout of the club is ratified.”

He adds that United want the addition of younger practitioners who have the knowledge of more modern and newer techniques, including a “forward-thinking” approach to sports medicine.

It sounds like United are looking at the clubs around them and fear they are being left behind.
