Silvestre: Champions League exit will not create extra pressure for Erik ten Hag

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes the Champions League exit will not create extra pressure for Erik ten Hag.

United were booed off the pitch after crashing out of Europe on Tuesday night. The 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich saw the Reds finish bottom of Group A in the Champions League – so there will be no European football to look forward to after Christmas.

It comes as a blow because we spent so long fighting to get back into the Champions League. All for one win in the group stages and a bottom place finish.

However, Silvestre doesn’t think United are equipped to win any competitions this season, which is the biggest reason why Silvestre feels Ten Hag will override this storm.

“I think the pressure on Erik ten Hag is to improve their position in the table, and he is for sure disappointed right now,” Silvestre told bettingexperts.co.uk. “But there is already pressure, so I don’t think it will change his position regardless if they are qualifying from their group or not.

“Right now the form of the team tells you that they are now equipped to win any of the competitions, so I don’t think it will put extra pressure on Erik ten Hag.”

Silvestre is overlooking the quality – or lack of – that was in Group A since Copenhagen were the team to join Bayern in the last-16.

The one positive we can take from last night is that we haven’t ended up in the Europa League. That means less midweek fixtures after Christmas and that should give Ten Hag’s side more time to recover from domestic fixtures.

Let us know in the comment section if you think the Champions League knockout puts more pressure on Ten Hag. I think it’s naive to say that it won’t because it’s a huge let down in our campaign which has been full of negatives.
