Jamie Redknapp urges Eddie Howe to sign former Manchester United star

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has weighed in on David de Gea’s future with the goalkeeper still a free agent after being released by Manchester United during the summer.

The Sky Sports pundit believes Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe should look to sign the Spaniard because the Magpies will be without first-choice stopper Nick Pope for the coming months.

With De Gea available on a Bosman deal, it would make sense as a stop gap option at the very least, though Newcastle have other keepers like Martin Dubravka.

“I would say that bringing in David de Gea for Martin Dubravka would be an upgrade after what he did at Manchester United,” Redknapp said, as quoted by Caught Offside. He added: “It’s a nasty injury, and so when you’ve got a goalkeeper of that quality I would do it and not wait as others might move ahead of you.

“I’m surprised someone hasn’t taken him already to be honest.”

These comments came after Newcastle suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Tottenham in the Premier League.

Howe may look to make a move for a new keeper when the January transfer window opens. Pope has been a key player for the Magpies and it won’t be easy to find a better stop gap option than De Gea.

Even as a free agent, De Gea is one of the biggest names on the market right now.
