Bayern Munich confirm injury blow ahead of Manchester United clash

Bayern Munich have confirmed that they will be without former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry at Old Trafford for Tuesday night’s crucial Champions League tie.

Gnabry, 28, was forced off during Bayern’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday and he has already been deemed unavailable to travel to Manchester for their upcoming match.

A statement from Bayern read (via Manchester Evening News): “Serge Gnaby suffered a muscle tendon injury in the left adductor area during the 5-1 defeat in Frankfurt on Saturday. Gnabry, who had to come off after just five minutes in Frankfurt after coming on as a second-half substitute, will therefore miss the upcoming games.”

The Germany international is one of Bayern’s star attacking players, but let’s not pretend they haven’t got enough players in their team to put the ball in the back of the net after scoring four times against us in Bavaria in a 4-3 defeat earlier this season.

The Bundesliga champions have already won the group and are safely through to the last-16, but it’s a crucial fixture as far as United are concerned because we still stand a slight chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition.

Ten Hag’s side can gain qualification to the next round by beating Bayern, but we are also relying on Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw in the other Group A fixture. There is no denying it’s a huge ask.

United know all about injuries with several key players missing for chunks of the season. I’m a believer that is the biggest factor behind our inconsistency, but it would be naïve to suggest we haven’t got underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Ten Hag will be tasked with fielding a team, from a group of inconsistent players, to beat the German champions.
