Former Manchester United chief executive leads opposition to controversial UEFA plan

Former Manchester United chief executive is the leading candidate that would challenge Aleksandar Ceferin’s new controversial plan for UEFA that would also see him as president until 2031.

According to Mail Sport, Gill is leading the resistance to planned amendments to the UEFA Statues that would permit Ceferin a fourth term in office, with the former Manchester United chief executive reacting angrily when the proposals were tabled during a UEFA Executive Committee in Hamburg last week.

Gill was at United – working side by side with Sir Alex Ferguson – before, during and after the Glazer takeover. He once said ‘debt was the road to ruin’ and went on to ignore fan groups once the Malcolm Glazer’s controversial takeover was complete.

The report states that proposed amendments, which have yet to be made public, will be put to a vote of all 55 UEFA member countries at the Congress in Paris with a simple majority of 28 required for them to be introduced.

It is believed that Gill has been outspoken against the changes in the ExCo meeting on the grounds they are undemocratic and not in the best interests in football, which to be fair, is something I feel whenever big decisions are made in the game nowadays. The beautiful game has sold its soul.

Gill wants to introduce extending the current three-term limit for presidential and executive office holders risked returning UEFA to the bad old days of football governance.

He would be up against Ceferin, who was elected UEFA president in 2016.

The Daily Mail add that UEFA and Gill declined the comment on the story before it was published.
