Journalist predicts United will overlook clause in summer signing’s contract after player’s latest injury setback

Manchester United confirmed this morning that Tyrell Malacia had suffered a setback in his injury recovery and his return has consequently been delayed until the new year.

The defender is yet to feature in any competitive action this season – or even throughout United’s pre-season tour – due to a knee injury that he sustained on the final day of the 2022/2023 Premier League campaign.

Malacia, 24, underwent surgery to correct the issue in the summer, however, has since required a second operation after a problem was flagged during his rehabilitation. His expected return timeframe is now scheduled for early 2024.

When fellow left-back Luke Shaw was also dealt a spell on the sidelines at the beginning of the term, United were forced into acquiring coverage on the left flank in the form of Tottenham Hostpur’s Sergio Reguilon, who arrived at Old Trafford in a loan move on deadline day.

Reguilon likely to stay until the summer

The Red Devils and Spurs included a break clause in the terms that could’ve seen Reguilon sent back to North London in January but given Malacia’s current status, Samuel Luckhurst has predicted that the loanee will be staying with United for the full season.

Unfortunately – and almost quite ironically, Reguilon has proven rather injury-prone himself thus far and has been limited to just four Premier League appearances and two in the Champions League. He was an unused substitute for United’s past two matches against Everton and Galatasaray respectively.
