Ten Hag suspended: Manchester United assistant will be on touchline at Everton

Manchester United will be without Erik ten Hag’s presence on the touchline when the team travels to Everton.

Erik ten Hag is serving a one-match touchline suspension after being booked by referee Graham Scott during the 1-0 win over Luton Town prior to the international break.

It was Ten Hag’s third booking of the season after receiving yellow cards in defeats against Tottenham and Arsenal earlier this season. The less said about those games the better.

Ten Hag has confirmed that assistant coach Mitchell van der Gaag will be on the touchline during United’s trip to Goodison Park. The manager is not permitted to take up his usual position in the dugout, although he can watch the game from the director’s box and use a communication device to give instructions to his staff. Those instructions will be then given by Van der Gaag.

“I’m quite confident,” Ten Hag said, as per ManUtd.com. “I will have an even better overview [from the stands], but we have a very good backroom staff.

“They are very capable and experienced, so they know what to do. That will not affect our game.”

Van der Gaag’s previous work

The fellow Dutchman cut his teeth with Maritimo and Belenenses in Portugal and worked briefly in Cyprus before returning to his homeland.

Van der Gaag took charge of FC Eindhoven, Excelsior, NAC Breda and Ajax’s youth team before joining the Ajax first-team as Ten Hag’s assistant.
