Raphael Varane had lost his place in the Manchester United defence prior to the international break, with Erik ten Hag preferring Jonny Evans alongside Harry Maguire, but there are now reports of a breakdown in relationship between the player and manager.

The report from the Daily Mail comes with speculation that Varane is looking to leave United in the new year after falling out with Ten Hag. It is suggest that a frank exchange of views took place after Varane was dropped for the Manchester derby last month.

Varane has made three substitute appearances since then but is said to be unhappy that Evans, who arrived in the summer as a free agent, has been chosen ahead of him.

In turn, Varane has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and the Saudi Pro League.

However, it’s not like Varane has legs to stand on in an argument over his place in the team because he has performed poorly this season. He’s also problematic in terms of injuries and can’t seem to get a proper run of games under his belt.

Victor Lindelof started beside Maguire in the 1-0 win over Luton Town due to Evans’ injury, but it remains to be seen who Ten Hag will select on Sunday when the Reds travel to Goodison Park.

United have also been linked with a number of centre-backs and fans will be eager to see if the club bring in any new signings in January.
