Lens boss opens door for out-of-favour Manchester United defender

RC Lens head coach Franck Haise admits the Ligue 1 club would welcome Raphael Varane back to the club if the opportunity became a possibility.

Reports in the past week have seen Varane, now retired from the France national team, linked with an exit from Manchester United.

Varane has seen his place in the team handed to Jonny Evans in recent matches, although the Northern Ireland international will miss Sunday’s trip to Goodison Park. That means Varane will be competing for a place in the team with Victor Lindelof.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move in January, but Erik ten Hag was quick to dismiss those reports at his press conference on Friday afternoon.

He has been subject to interest from Bayern Munich and the Saudi Pro League, but Haise has admitted that if Varane wanted to return to his former club, he would be more than welcome. Financially it could be tricky, though.

“If Varane wants to return, we will welcome him with open arms,” Haise said, as quoted by Calciomercato. “However, with the contract, it’s another thing. I read that it would also be complicated for Bayern Munich to pay his salary. And if it is (difficult) for them… but maybe he wants to come back. I don’t know. Who knows? However, it is not a current debate to be addressed now.”

Varane will have no shortage of options if he does decide to leave United, but I don’t get the impression that United are trying to sell him midway through the season. It would be a crazy decision given the amount of injuries we’ve had in defence – unless we are made a good offer, of course.
