Jaap Stam explains why Manchester United starlet has struggled in the Premier League

Jaap Stam is a big fan of Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund and says the youngster needs the help of his team-mates before he starts scoring goals in the Premier League.

There’s already a huge difference when Hojlund plays in Europe for United – scoring five goals in as four games – but he has yet to open his account in the Premier League.

In an interview with Tipsbladet, Stam explains that Hojlund is a man crying out for quality service and it doesn’t help that United’s wingers have been misfiring this season.

“He has made a really good impression on me,” Stam said. “I think he is a really good player. He is very talented. He has an excellent left foot, a really good physique and lots of speed. And he has shown that in his first matches for United.

“When you come to such a big club as a very young man, it is not easy (for Hojlund) to show his qualities. Because he also needs the players around him (to help out). He needs them to put him on the stage and give him opportunities to score.”

It’s important to note that Hojlund has come into a team full of injuries and one that is low on confidence. Stam adds that in his assessment, saying: “He plays in a team that lacks confidence. (Hojlund) has players around him who don’t have the confidence, and maybe not even the qualities to play at this level. So it’s not going to be easy for him. But he’s just going to have to do what he can.

“He must show his qualities and work hard. Hopefully, he scores more goals and then he gets even more confidence.”

Next up for United is a trip to Goodison Park and Everton will be looking for a response after the Premier League gave them a 10-point deduction last week.
