Swedish press criticise Victor Lindelof after shocking 3-0 defeat to Azerbaijan

It wasn’t a night to remember for Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof as Sweden fell to a shocking defeat against Azerbaijan.

Sweden slumped to a first defeat against Azerbaijan, losing 3-0 in Baku, despite already beating the same team 5-0 in March.

It sounds like heads have dropped with this being Janne Anderson’s final week in charge.

Lindelof was punished early on after a lapse in concentration as Renant Dadashov found Emin Mahmudov to volley home in the third minute. Three minutes later, Dadashov got his name on the scoresheet to make matters worse for the Swedes. The humiliation continued in the 89th minute when Robin Olsen was lobbed from long range.

Sweden were already out of contention in Group F, with Belgium and Austria having qualified and there is no play-off route available to them.

The Swedish press reacted negatively to Sweden’s overall performance, as well as Lindelof’s role in Azerbaijan’s first goal. Fotboll Skanalen criticised the centre-back for losing possession just outside the penalty area before the opening goal.

Furthermore, Lindelof was given a match rating of 1/5 from the same publication, along with the following description: “The captain put his team in a tough spot when he conceded 1-0 to Azerbaijan early on. An usually weak international match by the centre-back.”

Lindelof gets his share of criticism in a United shirt, too. This week he said it was ‘sad’ that Richard Arnold will leave the club after 16-years.
