Jamie Carragher demands VAR is scrapped after controversial Manchester United red card

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called for VAR to be scrapped after Marcus Rashford’s red card on Wednesday night.

VAR dominated the headlines after FC Copenhagen’s 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Champions League. Not only did Marcus Rashford pick up a controversial red card, but both teams were awarded penalties for handball inside the box. All three VAR decisions caused a debate on social media.

United threw away a two-goal lead in the first half after Rashford’s dismissal. They recovered in the second half to make it 3-2, although the Danish champions kept pushing and won the game 4-3 in stoppage time.

However, Carragher also got involved in the debate on X, formerly known as Twitter, by suggesting United were lucky to get a penalty for handball: “The game has gone! Get rid of VAR, that’s a disgrace.”

And, to be fair, Carragher has a point. I only thought the penalty should be given because of the handball decision that went Copenhagen’s way.

Carragher also thought Rashford’s red card was the wrong call. The CBS Sports pundit added: “No way is that a red card for Rashford! Hate these slow-motion replays and still images that make everything look 10 times worse.”

The red card undoubtedly changed the game in Copenhagen’s favour. It was all United up until that point.
