Erik ten Hag explains starting XI vs Copenhagen with Mount and Varane benched again

Erik ten Hag has explained his team selection for tonight’s Champions League clash against Copenhagen.

The Manchester United boss has made just one change from last Saturday’s win over Fulham, which sees Marcus Rashford return to the starting XI after recovering from his injury setback. Antony has dropped to the bench, while Alejandro Garnacho has retained his place.

Raphael Varane’s omission from the team has raised eyebrows amongst the fanbase, as the four-time Champions League has again been named as a substitute and Jonny Evans has been chosen to partner Harry Maguire.

Mason Mount, who joined in a £60 million package from Chelsea in the summer, has also been overlooked in midfield.

Ten Hag explains starting XI

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of kick-off, Ten Hag provided some insight into his choices.

“We trust this team and they did very well last Saturday [Fulham]. We have to have a consistent team and then you have to trust the team. They fought together and I know they can still do better,” the manager explained, as quoted by Manchester Evening News.

“They can still do better in possession, but they fought as a team and then you have to give trust. They know what to today and they know how to deal with it [atmosphere]. Fulham, [and] Burnley, also have such atmospheres and the players had some experiences last year in Barcelona, it’s great to play in such atmospheres.”

Kick-off is at 8pm at the Parken Stadium and United must leave Denmark with all three points in the bag. Hopefully, they’re able to get the job done.
