Anthony Martial reportedly headed straight down the tunnel after full-time at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
The reasons for the 27-year-old being in a rush to get off the pitch are unknown, but he didn’t seem too bothered as he ignored the jubilant scenes in the away end following Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time winner.
Most of Martial’s teammates took the time to acknowledge the fans that paid their hard-earned money to support the team – but reports suggest there was one player who couldn’t look less interested in taking part.
No prizes for guessing who.
According to The Express, Martial stormed down the tunnel at full-time in a manner you would only expect after a bad defeat.
At least he was seen congratulating Fernandes after the goal…
The impact-less impact substitute has just one goal to his name from 15 appearances this season, whereas Hojlund has three goals in the Champions League (none in the Premier League yet). We aren’t comparing the two because Hojlund, who offers a lot more on the pitch, is only 20-years-old.
Sadly, Hojlund doesn’t have a senior striker to look up to as a role model at United.
It is also important to note that the current United side is not creating enough chances for its forward players. This means Hojlund – or Martial for the matter – are feeding on scraps. Something has to change, though I don’t think any excuses can be made for the Frenchman anymore especially when he looks like somebody who has given up.
Martial’s contract expires at the end of the season and I don’t think United should offer him a one-year extension. He came with promise but it has been a disappointing nine year career at Old Trafford for the former AS Monaco academy graduate.
Injury woes completely destroyed his development and it’s time to accept that. It’s also time to move on.
United are being linked with a number of strikers ahead of the January transfer market, including Gabriel Barbosa at Flemango.
