The media are going in hard on Erik ten Hag.
Even Wayne Rooney was asked if he’d any sympathy for the Manchester United manager, but the Birmingham City manager stressed that pressure is part of the job.
Rooney added that he thinks the players need to take more responsibility for the poor results this season.
However, the increasing pressure on Ten Hag got worse on Wednesday night as United crashed out of the Carabao Cup, losing 3-0 against Newcastle at Old Trafford.
As a result, we’ve seen reports about players beginning to doubt Ten Hag’s methods but the latest update suggests United could look at managers elsewhere in the near future.
According to The Times, United are considering alternatives to Ten Hag after two heavy defeats at home in the past week – by Man City in the league and Newcastle in the cup – had left him at risk of being sacked.
It is understood that United have two potential candidates, including Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and the currently unemployed Zinedine Zidane.
The report states that the situation is hugely complicated by the uncertainty over ownership.
Stretty News verdict
Manchester United are a mess at the moment. There is no denying that there are problems on and off the pitch.
However, I don’t think sacking Ten Hag is the answer. We cannot be fooled by some of the dressing room leaks that stem from players that will throw the next manager under the bus.
If Pep Guardiola, or any other manager, had to deal with the same structural problems he would struggle too.
Ten Hag has made mistakes (he is human), but he/SEG played the hand they were dealt in terms of recruitment. Now he needs to get United back to winning ways.
