Three observations after Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle – Carabao Cup journey ends

Manchester United crash out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-0 against Newcastle in the fourth round.

It was another embarrassing display from United and it’s only going to pile more pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Eddie Howe’s much-changed side grabbed an early lead when Miguel Almiron sent the ball past Andre Onana. Newcastle’s second came from Lewis Hall’s volley as the 19-year-old claimed his first senior goal.

With the scoreline 2-0 in the visitor’s favour, Ten Hag made two changes at the break. United started the second half well before Joe Willock scored Newcastle’s third against the run of play.

Boos rang around Old Trafford at full-time.

Without further ado, here are three observations from the game:

Crisis…

United have lost eight of their 15 games across all competitions this season. The players look completely shot of confidence and seem incapable of doing the most basic things. We are a club in turmoil with a range if issues on and off the pitch. This is definitely a crisis.

Pressure mounting for Ten Hag

More questions get asked with every defeat and the football has been appalling this season. Ten Hag needs to make changes or else his job will become untenable. I have my doubts over the players and the problems they bring to the table will resurface no matter who is in charge. The Dutchman is safe for now.

Wan-Bissaka boost

Diogo Dalot was deservedly hooked at half-time after a nightmare first half display. He would have watched the second half fearing the worst about his place in the team because Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a clear improvement when he came on at right-back. The former Crystal Palace defender returned after seven weeks out.

  1. Manchester United, one of the most iconic football clubs globally, has a rich history and a passionate fan base. The team’s successes and legendary players have left an indelible mark on the sport. Whether they’re in a period of triumph or transition, Manchester United’s enduring legacy in football remains undeniable, making them a perennial focus of excitement and discussion among fans and enthusiasts.

    1. True. But it would be nice if we could remain relevant (and competitive) in today’s footballing landscape too. 🤔

  2. As a child in the 1970s I was always fascinated as to how a club as huge as Man Utd ended up getting relegated. The idea it could happen again doesn’t seem so far fetched right now. Like the proverbial dead fish, we are rotting from the head down. Here’s hoping Sir Jim’s deal crosses the line soon and that he takes on the footballing side of the operation ASAP. We may be able to salvage next season if we’re lucky.
