Chris Sutton names manager United should appoint to replace Erik ten Hag

Chris Sutton thinks Manchester United should look at Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou if Erik ten Hag is sacked.

A lot of pundits are happy to kick Ten Hag when he’s down, but this isn’t something that will surprise United fans because our managers always get criticism worse than others.

Ten Hag is going through a difficult period as United manager, though. It has been a shocking start to the season made worse by Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Man City.

Now, for the first time in his United tenure, serious questions are being asked of his management. Some of the decisions made at the weekend did anything but help his case.

From starting Scott McTominay ahead of Mason Mount to leaving Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon on the bench. It would give you a headache if you tried making sense of it all.

“Big Ange,” Sutton said on the ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ podcast when asked who should take Ten Hag’s place in the Old Trafford hotseat.

“I don’t want to keep going on about big Ange. But when he first came in at Tottenham, there was this campaign saying ‘hashtag Postecoglou Out’.

“Where are these people now? Where are you?”

The immediate problem I have with this take is Postecoglou is the new shiny toy and it won’t be long before pundits have a new manager to drool over in the Premier League.

That is not to suggest Postecoglou isn’t a good manager. He has clearly shown the world he’s a terrific coach, but I believe we’ve already got one in Ten Hag.

United should back the Dutchman to the hill and back.

  1. More to the point, why would Ange leave Spurs ? He’s at a club where he’s enjoying great success and which is big enough for him to take places. He’s got a board that does what he wants, a scouting set up that seems to be finding the players he needs and a squad that plays the way he wants them to play. Why would he abandon that for the mess that is United ?

  2. What a stupid idea. Ange is having a great season so far at Spurs but he doesn’t have a proven track record. Let’s see where Spurs finish this season then re-evaluate what Sutton thinks.
