David Moyes hails Sir Bobby Charlton as tributes continue for Manchester United legend

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has paid tribute to Manchester United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton following his death aged 86.

Charlton, who passed away on Saturday morning, lifted three league titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup during his 17-year career at Old Trafford. His debut for United came in 1956 and he went on to make 758 appearances, scoring an incredible 249 goals.

In many ways, Charlton outlived his dream as a Manchester United player. He became a club legend, ambassador and someone many recognise as a symbol of what our fantastic football club stands for.

Moyes reflected on the sad news over the weekend before his West Ham side suffered defeat at the hands of West Ham.

“I’m deeply saddened and I send my condolences to all his family,” Moyes said, as quoted by the official West Ham website. “The biggest thing everybody remembers, more than anything, is how great a man he was. He was such a good man.

“For me, it was difficult at times at Manchester United and he was incredibly supportive and always had something to say to me. He had a great wife in Lady Norma and even when I lost my job she phoned my wife up, which was really important at the time.

“For me, he carried off all the things that Manchester United were good for. He showed the traditions, he showed exactly how it should be, he showed great humility wherever he went, but not only that at Manchester United, he was ultimately one of the main people in English football over the years.

“When you think of the greats who have come through English football, Bobby Charlton would definitely be in there.”

Fans will gather at Old Trafford when the Reds take on Copenhagen in the Champions League. It’s expected to be an emotional night as we continue to mourn the loss of an icon.
