Sir Jim Ratcliffe plans to increase Old Trafford capacity to 90,000 if bid is successful

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS will reportedly try and expand Old Trafford’s capacity to 90,000 seats if the Englishman’s minority stake proposal is accepted.

Ratcliffe is awaiting a response from the Glazer family and Manchester United board regarding his £1.3 billion offer for a 25 per cent stake in England’s most successful club. A meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, October 19 to discuss the situation as fans await a resolution to the 11-month long process.

It comes after Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani pulled out of the takeover race when his final, multi-billion offer for a complete sale was rejected by the Glazers.

The Qatar-based investor withdrawing his interest has now placed Ratcliffe in pole position to acquire shares in United, which would also see him granted sporting control over key operations. He plans to, over time, gain full ownership and buy out the Glazer siblings.

Work must be done at Old Trafford

Match-going supporters are well aware that whilst the Theatre of Dreams title applies to the history and success of United, it does not represent the state of the stadium as a whole. Old Trafford is in dire need of a revamp, especially when fans are frequently getting soaked through its leaky roof during games.

According to The Times, Ratcliffe intends to expand the Reds’ home turf from its current 74,310 capacity to around 90,000.
