Wayne Rooney approached by Birmingham City

Birmingham City have approached Wayne Rooney to become their manager after sacking John Eustace.

A mutual decision was made over the weekend as Rooney terminated his DC United contract, after the MLS outfit failed to reach the play-offs.

John Eustace was sent his marching orders at St Andrew’s this morning, despite Birmingham winning 3-1 on Friday night against West Brom.

A statement explaining Eustace’s sacking from Birmingham said “it is essential that the board of directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire football club.”

Birmingham added that a new manager will be announced in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports claim Birmingham have made an initial approach to talk to Wayne Rooney, who is understood to still be in the US.

Official talks with Birmingham are yet to start and I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see Rooney return to the UK after an underwhelming stint in the MLS.

It’s a move that would see him challenged in a difficult league. That said, they’ve stand a chance of reaching the play-offs which means Rooney would have more than enough to work with at Birmingham. They are currently sat in sixth place – 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion spots.
