Lisandro Martinez faces a lengthly period in the treatment room.
Manchester United confirmed on Friday that the 25-year-old World Cup winner re-aggravated a foot injury during their defeat to Arsenal.
It is believed to be a reoccurrence of the problem that cut short his first season at Old Trafford, so the club will need to take more caution with his recovery this time around.
The injury didn’t stop Martinez reporting for international duty last month but he didn’t feature for Argentina, although he did play for United when he returned – against Brighton and Bayern Munich. It is now being suggested that he took painkillers before both games.
A report from the Daily Mail now claims Martinez will undergo a second operation on his broken metatarsal.
Martinez underwent tests on Thursday, with deflating results because specialists learned the fracture has not healed appropriately.
The centre-back could be missing from Erik ten Hag’s side for at least three months, which adds to the list of injury blows the manager has to deal with this season.
