Marc Skinner surprised by how Manchester United dominated WSL opener

Manchester United got their Women’s Super League campaign off to a winning start thanks to a Rachel Williams winner in stoppage time.

Williams scored after Lucia Garcia scored to equalise for United three minutes after Aston Villa took the lead.

Villa took the lead after 76 minutes as Rachel Daly sent her effort past Mary Earps. Thankfully for Marc Skinner’s side, they showed reliance to score an equaliser three minutes later through Garcia.

Speaking after the match, Skinner said (via Manchester Evening News): “From my perspective that was an absolutely wonderful performance consider we haven’t had time together.

“We’re not quite ready where they know exactly what each other are doing, because we’ve had the five days together. We’ve seen patterns and ideas and I think the best players read off each other – if the pattern disappears they need to know what to do.

“That was a deep block today, because they went down to 10 players, so we bought Rachel [Williams] on to be aggressive in the air – getting crosses in from the wide positions because they were narrower. I’ve always said it’s about having better quality thinkers.”

At least one of our teams have got off to a flying start. Hopefully the men’s follow suit after losing four of their first 7 Premier League matches this season.
