David de Gea left Manchester United this summer after his contract expired, but the Spaniard has yet to find a new club.
Fresh reports suggest De Gea is considering a shock retirement from football amid his struggles to find a new club after leaving United.
It seems the 32-year-old is too proud to accept a back-up role at another number and has no plans to drop his standards significantly in terms of club size.
According to The Guardian, De Gea is pondering retirement if he isn’t tabled an offer to become a top club’s No 1 goalkeeper. It is believed De Gea turned down approaches from Saudi Arabia because he intends to stay in Europe.
Erik ten Hag decided to replace De Gea with former Ajax and Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer. The Cameroonian has had a difficult start to the season and leaks about players being unhappy over De Gea are very timely.
There is apparently a feeling from some players in the dressing that he deserved a better farewell after providing the club with 12-years worth of service. But Ten Hag has a job to do and I’m sure his intentions were to sort the goalkeeper situation as quick as possible.
De Gea was offered a new deal on reduced terms from his previous £375,000-a-week salary. Negotiations collapsed and he is currently listed as a free agent.
I don’t think we can blame him for taking such a stance, although it’s a bit naive to expect a top club to come in for him now when none showed any interest when he was available for free during the summer.
Dare I say the writing it on the wall?
