Manchester United Women confirm signing of World Cup winner Irene Guerrero

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of World Cup winning midfielder Irene Guerrero from Atletico Madrid.

The club are expected to be busy for deadline day but Marc Skinner will be delighted to get the ball rolling with Guerrero, who was part of the Spain squad that won this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

Guerrero previously enjoyed spells at Real Betis and Levante before kicking on with his career at Atletico Madrid. Now, she will move to Old Trafford.

It has already been a remarkable summer for the Spaniard after going all the way in the World Cup and beating the Lionesses 1-0 in the final.

Speaking about her transfer to Manchester United, Guerrero told club media: “I feel very happy and very privileged to be here. I am very proud to be part of the Manchester United family and look forward to achieving all our goals together.”

Guerrero is one of four possible deadline day arrivals for United. Others may include OL Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Lyon’s Melvine Malard and Everton’s Gabby George.

Polly Bancroft added: “Irene’s signing is the latest example of the ambition of Manchester United Women, and we cannot wait to see her pull on our famous red shirt and entertain our magnificent fans – at home and in Europe.”

On the day we welcome Guerrero and possibly more recruits, we say goodbye to Ivana Fuso who has joined Birmingham City on a two-year deal. The 22-year-old Brazilian spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen.

Martha Thomas could be a second departure on the day.
