Manchester United might need to call time on their association with Anthony Martial and they could do so at the end of the season by not trigger the one-year extension in his contract.

If things stay the same for the Frenchman, who has stagnated for years whilst a top earner at Old Trafford, United would be crazy to keep Martial.

Especially when Erik ten Hag will be looking to bolster their attack next summer, amid links to Brighton & Hove starlet Evan Ferguson.

Martial has been at United since 2015 and he had shown glimpses that he had huge potential, especially early on in his career like when he scored off the bench on his debut against Liverpool.

Sadly, the France international never matched his potential with his inconsistent performances.

He had a chance to prove himself on loan at Sevilla during the second-half of last season, but it says a lot that they were not trying to make the deal permanent when the loan spell expired. They had seen enough.

There’s currently a year on his contract and Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst has vaguely suggested that United have a decision to make at the end of the season. It will inevitable again at that point that the manager will want to improve his squad and I don’t think many fans would miss Martial.

All of this means Martial could leave United for free at the end of his contract but it’s not like he has the entire season to prove himself.

If he can be bothered to be available as Rasmus Hojlund’s back-up! We know how his nose gets put out of joint when new centre-forwards come in.
