Manchester United and Antony mutually agree for winger to take ‘period of absence’ following allegations

Manchester United have today released a statement that Antony will have a delayed return to the squad following the international break.

It comes after three separate women accused the winger of domestic violence and/or assault.

Brazil removed him from the squad for their World Cup qualifiers and pressure has only been mounting on United since their decision, which has likely led to Sunday’s announcement.

Their statement reads“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony.

“Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.

“As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

Meanwhile, Antony, who has denied any wrongdoing on numerous occasions, has also spoken out, adding: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me.”

“I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police.”

The allegations made against Antony

Gabriela Cavallin spoke of her tumultuous relationship with Antony, which included him allegedly trapping her in a moving car and threatening to throw her out, cutting her head and dislodging a breast implant, and attempting to hit her with a glass before slicing her finger open – amongst other things.

Law student Rayssa de Freitas states that she required hospital treatment in May 2022 after the player attacked her and Mallu Ohana in his car when the three of them exited a nightclub in Sao Paulo. A police report was filed at the time of the incident.

Ingrid Lana told Record TV that the 23-year-old assaulted her in October, saying: “He tried to have sex with me and I didn’t want to. He pushed me against the wall and I hit my head.”

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that they are currently investigating the matter.
