Alvaro Fernandez expected to leave on loan once Manchester United secure left-back

Alvaro Fernandez is likely to leave Manchester United on loan, despite being the only available natural left-back at the club.

The 20-year-old was overlooked by Erik ten Hag at the weekend when Diogo Dalot started at left-back against Nottingham Forest, which is something we discussed at length on this week’s podcast.

It says a lot for Fernandez that he’s not getting a chance now when Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both ruled out with injuries for the foreseeable future.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Fernandez is set to leave the club, though it could depend on United’s ability to recruit a replacement.

La Liga side Granada have been linked with a move for Fernandez this summer, and it goes without saying that he would develop more from regular game time than sitting on the bench.

It could be a matter of Ten Hag not thinking Fernandez is ready, but if he’s not ready now when will he be? I don’t think he will get another opportunity like this to get a run in the team.

Fernandez joined United’s academy from Real Madrid in 2020 but has yet to make his debut for the first-team.
