Steven Gerrard has taken to Instagram to dismiss the speculation regarding Al-Ettifaq and Mason Greenwood.
It was reported this morning that the Saudi Pro League club, which is managed by the former Liverpool captain, had offered Greenwood a £10million-a-year proposal to join them this summer.
The news comes after the 21-year-old was dismissed by Manchester United yesterday following severe backlash over their leaked attempts to reintegrate him into the squad. They are yet to terminate the outcast’s contract and instead will look to find him another suitable club before the window closes.
Greenwood had charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped – not cleared – in February 2023. The Crown Prosecution were unable to continue the investigation after key witnesses withdrew their participation in the case, and ‘new material’ came to light.
Gerrard rebuffs Greenwood interest
Gerrard will be well aware of the repercussions that would come with signing Greenwood, especially from Liverpool supporters that are still keeping tabs on his managerial career, and so he was quick to put the rumours to bed.
He shared on his personal Instagram account [@stevengerrard] a screenshot of Al-Ettifaq’s links with the forward, captioned: “Fake news”.
