Gary Neville says ‘pressure’ could prove too much for Hojlund, United must push for Kane

Gary Neville has given his verdict on Manchester United’s striker situation.

The Red Devils recently acquired 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund to resolve their longstanding striker woes, though he won’t be leading the line just yet – a back injury will keep him out of the opening few fixtures of the campaign, meaning his debut could come at the end of August.

However, being the 20-time English champions’ £72 million frontman comes with its woes; every neutral and rival fan will be keeping a close eye on any mistake. The expectation for goal contributions will also, obviously, linger on the mind of Hojlund, but the Old Trafford faithful must be patient and give him time to adjust to the Premier League.

Neville touched on the subject in the latest instalment of The Overlap Fan Debate and suggested that his former club should be trying harder to sign Harry Kane, who has been the subject of three failed bids from Bayern Munich.

If a deal fails to materialise with the Bundesliga giants, he’s likely to see out his contract with Tottenham Hotspur until next summer, when he’ll become a free agent.

Neville on Hojlund + Kane

“I hope they’re [United] being clever, and Kane’s being clever,”  Neville began. “And they’re waiting to get a deal whereby they agree a deal with [Bayern] Munich, he says, ‘no I’m not going, and I want to go to United.’”

“United need Kane, they still need the young lad [Hojlund] as well to back him up and bed in and play his 25/30 games because he didn’t play every game for Atalanta last season. I’m worried that we’ve got this kid up front that, to be fair, has massive pressure on his shoulders.

“Everyone’s going to be watching him, he needs that pressure taken off him a bit. Kane puts United into that sort of realm of catching Arsenal and [Manchester] City.”

  1. has gary ever thought that maybe harry kane doesn’t want to sign for united and would prefer a move to german giants bayern, not to mention guaranteed title and a decent shout at CL? or maybe wait a year and get to pick his club with a crazy signing on fee?

why would he sign for united exactly? If I were in Kane’s shoes i wouldnt sign up as there is no clear indication united will be challenging for the PL nor CL any time soon.

united need to realise that players (correctly) don’t see much in united these days, hence the ridiculous wages we need to offer.
