Manchester United legend David Sadler is the latest player to be awarded a retrospective Division One winners’ medal.
The 77-year-old, who made 272 appearances for Manchester United over 10-years, will be honoured for his contribution to the club’s success in the league back in 1964/65.
Sadler was unfortunate to have failed to qualify for a championship medal in 1965 because he fell short of the minimum 14 appearances that were required at the time.
Thankfully, the EFL has since lowered its criteria.
Footballers with five or more appearances for league-winning teams are titled to a medal, so it’s only right that the new rules apply to historic campaigns.
Reacting to receiving his medal, Sadler told ManUtd.com: “To say I was surprised after all this time to recieve this medal would be putting it mildly.
“It has brought back many happy and exciting memories. Playing for Manchester United was the best time of my life, and it’s a very nice feeling to be recognised all these years later.”
Congratulations to David. It goes without saying that it was a long time coming!
