Wayne Rooney has shared his view on the Glazer family and it would be safe to say it differs to ours and the majority of Manchester United fans.
Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer says the Glazers have been “very successful” and that they deserve credit for the job they’ve done over the past 18-years.
Is he talking about the debt they’ve inflicted on United, or how Old Trafford looks a wreck because they’ve never been willing to invest in the club?
The Glazers have milked United as their commercial cash cow and that’s the bottom line.
However, Rooney also acknowledges that change is needed at Old Trafford.
“They have been very successful,” Rooney told The Athletic.
“But it has probably got to a place where the fans really want a change. They want to maybe go in a different direction. It needs that excitement back, not just for the first team but to develop the academy and behind the scenes. I’m sure they will get the credit they deserve for the job they have done, but also they’re going to get the negativity from fans who never seem to acknowledge what they’ve done for the club.
“I’m sure it will be split, but I think a change is needed.”
Hmm… I think Rooney would struggle to give us any reasons for crediting the Glazers.
And, we shouldn’t forget Rooney’s transfer request in 2010, when he said he wanted to leave United because they couldn’t match his ambitions. Who did he blame for that?
In a strongly worded statement he said he did not believe United were able to sign the leading players needed to win major trophies – a year after Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Real Madrid.
“I met with David Gill [United’s chief executive] last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad,” Rooney said, as per The Guardian. “I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract.
“I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it. It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.
“I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?
“For me its all about winning trophies – as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.
“Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18.
“For Manchester United’s sake I wish he could go on forever because he’s a one‑off and a genius.”
Rooney ended up staying, but it is interesting to see how his tune has changed on the Glazers.
It’s a very odd take, too, because I am struggle to find one reason why the Glazers deserve any credit.
