Van de Beek 8, Evans 7: player ratings from Manchester United 1-0 Lyon

Manchester United have made it two wins from as many games in this summer’s pre-season campaign as Erik ten Hag’s men defeated Laurent Blanc’s Olympique Lyon side in Scotland.

Ten Hag made a couple of changes from the side that defeated Leeds United last week, with Antony and Kovar replacing Forson and Heaton.

Ten Hag had the chance to give some of his returning first-team regulars some minutes but they were all left out of the squad – it is likely they will feature against Arsenal on Saturday instead.

Donny van de Beek was in the side for the first time in over six months, having had his season abruptly ended due to a serious knee injury.

The Dutchman was a second-half substitute and he did not wait long to make his mark, giving United the lead after just four minutes on the pitch with a lovely volley.

Man United Player Ratings

Matej Kovar – 8
Played the entire 90 minutes and that is a sign that Ten Hag is liking what he is seeing. Kovar looks to be comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
A typically assured performance from the right-back.

Raphael Varane – 8
Cool as ever.

Lisandro Martinez – 8
Getting back into the groove of things.

Alvaro Fernandez – 7
Will play quite a lot over the summer tour after it was revealed that Tyrell Malacia had been ruled out due to injury.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8
Continues to impress at any given opportunity. Do not rule out a first-team role.

Mason Mount – 7
Still adjusting to new team-mates and a slightly deeper role than normal.

Antony – 7
A good return for the Brazilian. Played on both flanks. Should have scored.

Hannibal Mejbri – 8
A silky smooth figure in midfield that United don’t currently have.

Amad Diallo – 7
Do not rule out a first-team role for Amad either. As with Antony, he should have left the game with his name on the scoresheet.

Jadon Sancho – 6
He will be hoping for a better return on Saturday against Arsenal.

Substitutes
Marc Jurado – 7
Impressed against Leeds and did well here again.

Will Fish – 7
Slotted in nicely next to an experienced head.

Jonny Evans – 7
A blast from the past – you did not expect to see Evans playing for United a couple of days ago. Solid.

Brandon Williams – 7
Got the job done.

Daniel Gore – 9
Pick of the bunch in the second half – astute. Lovely assist for the goal.

Fred – 6
First appearance of the summer and you could tell.

Omari Forson – 6
Some good touches of the ball.

Donny van de Beek – 8
Could it be his summer of redemption? Looked relieved to see his goal hit the net.

Joe Hugill – 7
Did all the right things – the only thing missing was a goal.

Isak Hansen-Aaroen – 7
Promising cameo again.
