Fabrizio Ravanelli has given his verdict on Manchester United potentially signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The former Juventus striker believes Andre Onana offers better long-term value to Manchester United than current No. 1 David de Gea. He’s already worth more in the current market due to his age and suitability to how top teams want their keepers to play out from the back.

Reports suggest United and Inter officials are in talks over a transfer, and there’s a chance a deal could be concluded in the coming days. It is important to stress that most of these reports are coming from Italy, while outlets in the UK are sticking with the line that United are very interested in Onana.

Ravanelli, who also played for Middlesbrough, expects the Onana transfer to United to go through.

In an interview quoted by Calciomercato, Ravanelli said: “I think the offer will come, De Gea is currently unpresentable for Manchester United. Furthermore, Onana has a great relationship with the current Manchester manager.

“De Gea earns 22 million a year, United should sign Onana, who is stronger and saves on that salary. Beyond the cost of 50 million, it will amortise much better than De Gea.”

This comes after reports suggested United made a U-turn on a contact offer that De Gea had already signed.

It doesn’t look like Erik ten Hag is fighting to keep the Spaniard and that is enough to suggest he could easily drop to second choice keeper in the squad next season.

Onana’s ability to play out from the back will benefit United in attack, and our defenders might find it strange to have a keeper behind them that is willing to come out and claim the ball from crosses.

After leaving Barcelona for regular football at Ajax, where he played under Ten Hag, maybe it’s about time Onana returned to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Inter may have reached the Champions League final last season, but you can’t deny that moving to United would be a step up.
