David de Gea signed new deal before Manchester United U-turn

We are finally getting more clarity around David de Gea’s future and it doesn’t sound promising for the Manchester United goalkeeper.

According to The Athletic, De Gea signed a contract extension with United only for the club to back out of the agreed proposal.

De Gea, 32, agreed to a reduction on his current £375,000 p/w wages, but the club did not sign the contract.

That means it didn’t get the green light from someone with power at Old Trafford.

The report states United have submitted a new proposal to De Gea, whose contract expires later this week, with an even lower salary proposed.

It just doesn’t make sense to keep a keeper — likely to become second choice — on any more than £200,000k p/w.

Talks are understood to be ongoing between United and De Gea’s entourage, while the Spaniard has interest in him from Saudi Arabia.

The future looks bleak for De Gea at United if he wants to play every week. I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved on, especially given how the club already backed out of the last deal.

That will seem like a slap in the face for someone who has served United well down the years.

  1. it doesn’t make sense to hang on to de Gea if he has now been demoted to second choice. It can cause some tension between the incoming keeper which can easily spill to the dressing room & the club may find itself in the same old rut that has characterized the post-Fergie era.the incoming first choice keeper needs a smooth bedding in period & I don’t think the presence of his predecessor will aid the process.I just don’t understand why the club struggles in calling an end with associations that would have saved their purpose. We struggled to part with the likes of Mata,Pobga etc in the past when it was clear that going separate ways was the best for both parties. When you compare this approach with Man City for instance,it’s easy to identify one reason why a huge chasm btwn them & us has now dvped in terms of player quality. For example they let their hero Arguero go when sentimentalists were clamouring for a contract extension.if it was Man U I bet he would have been granted that arrangement.More decisiveness in simply telling him that they weren’t going to extend his contract would have resulted in an more amicable separation instead of this unnecessary drama that’s likely to cause acrimony.

  2. i want to point out that the 200k that dale suggests is far more than ederson and alisson, two of the best keepers in the world and so much better than de gea its ridiculous. de gea has been a liability for so long now it’s absurd that we would even consider him getting more than 100k – allison earns 150k (apparently) and this is the 7th highest earner at liverpool – united need to correct there wage structure – it is insane some of the wages these players are on. De gea was on 375k! thats just crazy money, theres talk of rashford getting the same wage – at city these wages are reserved for the likes of de bruyne and haaland – at united we give it to our goalkeeper!

  3. I’ll suggest we allow De gea to go, there’s no point handing out 200k a week contact to a second team player. Manchester United, need to work on their pay structure. And also learn how to conclude deals on time. Every end of season is always a double heart beat period for me.

  4. He’s been a grand servant to the club, and saved us from many a thrashing. If powers that be now feel he’s past his best, then so be it.
But handle it with a bit of class ffs. ( Glazers will need to Google ‘class’, of course ) This is heading same way as Lingard’s exit: pushed out the back door after years of service. Very poor for a Club of our standing.

  5. seriously we need players that are not considered 2nd choice in their national teams, see city for instance all intelligent players, who get called up 4 national duties, de gae has passed it too many errors, not one goal contribution like allisson and co
