On 3 May 2023, Manchester United unveiled a statue of club legend Jimmy Murphy. It was 65 years to the day since the Welshman led the club out at the 1958 FA Cup Final at Wembley… less than 3 months after the Munich Air Disaster.
Murphy saved United from going out of existence when he vowed to keep the red flag flying. Fans and former players have campaigned for a tribute at Old Trafford for many years.
At the ceremony to unveil the Jimmy Murphy Statue, lifelong fan Pete Martin sang a special version of ‘The Flag’ co-written by Tony Easom.
