Alejandro Garnacho to represent Argentina at U20 World Cup – What it means for Manchester United

Argentina have named Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho in their preliminary squad for the Under-20 World Cup.

The young Argentinians will be hoping to follow the same path as the senior team, who were crowned world champions for the third time in their history last year after an emphatic World Cup campaign.

Many fans suggested that Garnacho was unlucky to miss out on the call-up for the tournament in Qatar, though he’ll no doubt get his chance over the coming years.

The U20 World Cup is set to kick off on May 20, so the 18-year-old faces a race for fitness if he wants to feature. He hasn’t played for the Red Devils since March when he picked up an injury during a home clash with Southampton.

Garnacho did provide a promising recovery update this week though; he shared a picture to Instagram captioned “back with the boots”, meaning a return to first-team training could be right around the corner.

His creative flair and skilful abilities have been sorely missed in his absence and supporters can’t wait to see him back on the pitch to finish his breakthrough season, especially given the fixtures United could have on the horizon – if they oversee wins on Thursday and Sunday, they’ll be in the Europa League semi-finals and the FA Cup final.

However, should the club allow Garnacho to be released on international duty, he may be unavailable to feature if his national team progresses through the competition. Premier League action runs until May 28, the Europa League final is on May 31 and FA Cup final is scheduled for June 3.
