Lothar Matthaus damning assessment of Harry Kane amid transfer links

Harry Kane’s future has been thrown up in the air. There will be just one year left on his current deal at the end of the current season and he has yet to agree new terms at Tottenham Hotspur.

In turn, Manchester United have been tipped to be interested, as have Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich who are still looking for a proper striker to replace Robert Lewandowski – not in the mould of Sadio Mane, who punches his team-mates.

Bayern Munich have been warned Kane is “too old and expensive” by club legend Lothar Matthaus, with the England captain once again linked with a move to Germany.

Even though Bayern’s only real striker option is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Matthaus still doesn’t want Kane anywhere near the Bundesliga champions.

Matthaus does not believe Bayern should sign the 29-year-old due to his age and value which is likely to be over £100m this summer.

He would rather they signed Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, Eintracht Frankfurt striker Randal Kolo Muani and Werder Bremen goalscorer Niclas Fullkrug.

In a column for Sky Deutschland, Matthaus wrote: “I’m excited to see if a new striker comes along. Everyone is talking about Victor Osimhen for his sensational performance at Napoli. You never know if he can do that in Munich, but I think he would be a good fit.

“Randal Kolo Muani may need a little more room and space than a Bayern striker usually has, but he’s also good in the box and could work in Munich. Harry Kane would be too old and too expensive for me.

“The price-performance ratio could speak for Niclas Füllkrug. He would probably be available for €20-25 million [£17.6m-£22m] and score 25 goals in Munich. He’s already scored 20 times at Werder.”

Do you think United should have the same worries over Kane?

  1. I took a United mate to Tottenham recently as he hadn’t seen the ground. After the game he said ‘I had no idea Kane was that good’. I watch the dullest side in the PL every week and amongst the gloom shines Harry Kane. Apart from raw pace he has absolutely everything. Top, top defenders change the way they play because he completely spooks them with his movement and they don’t know whether to stick or twist. It’s easy to work out who the best players are – they get the most abuse from opposition fans. Hence the stick Fernandes gets. That’s why so many ‘fans’ are forever saying (amongst other things) that he is overrated. Trust me – he is underrated. As for his age, anyone who says Kane is too old has clearly never heard of Ryan Giggs or Teddy Sheringham. Kane is getting better as he ages like a fine wine. This season, for example, he has clearly worked on his heading. His positional play improves every week. I believe he will play until he is in his late 30s. His injury record is incredible having missed under 20 games injured in 9 seasons – amazing for any player let alone a footballer who gets so much stick. There is a misconception that he has dodgy ankles and, if three short injuries in 9 years counts, then he has. It is just the normal nonsense written about him. Irrespective of who United want to sign up front they would be mad not to spend whatever it takes to buy Kane. He is one of the few players around who would walk into the City team, irrespective of whether Haaland plays, so buying him would be a major coup. For what it’s worth, I think he will see out his last season at Tottenham for a number of reasons (family situation being one of them) and see how the land lies then. At that stage he can basically do whatever he likes and pick up one of the most profitable contracts in football.
